Silent Key
It is with profound sadness that I must inform fellow HAMs of the passing of Jeff Bodin, WA0VOM. Jeff and I met in 2017 through our common interest in Kenwood radios, particularly the TS-930S, but we also shared an appreciation of older classic rigs from National to Collins. We held skeds in which I used radios ranging from a Kenwood TS-830S or 930S to an early model Collins KWM-2 that I was trying to restore. Jeff’s favorite radios were his Kenwood TS-930S or his TS-2000.
As a medical doctor (internal medicine), Jeff served his country in the US Air Force in Cairo, Egypt from 1999 to 2001, in Turkey from 2002 to 2003 and in Afghanistan in 2007. While in Cairo, he set up a radio station and worked about 700 contacts so that HAMs could add Egypt to their list of Countries.
Jeff was more than a friend and fellow HAM operator; he was a source of constant encouragement to me while I was in the hospital for 3 months in late 2021 battling acute pulmonary edema, and during my long recovery period. Even though he was waging his own war with Mesothelioma, he was always interested in my treatment and progress, and since he was a doctor, he would have me send PDFs of my test results so that he could look them over. I valued his comments and suggestions, because I knew they were motivated by friendship rather than money.
I will miss Jeff, and our discussions about radio, medicine, and life in general.
